Stony Brook Medicine (Stony Brook University Hospital) Supervising Janitor - Full Time Night Shift in Stony Brook, New York

Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, our Janitors are responsible for the cleaning, maintenance, and care of the hospital and adjacent grounds and sidewalks. Our Janitors respond to building issues and perform basic maintenance; submit work orders for building repairs; and order and restock cleaning supplies.

Qualified candidates should demonstrate excellent intrapersonal skills and time management skills. They should have attention to detail and be able to work with all levels of the organization.

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).

For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

Duties of a Supervising Janitor may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Supervises and administers a program of systematic cleaning and care of assigned building areas or the entire program in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Plans and schedules staff assignments and cleaning services; reassigns staff to ensure that work is accomplished according to schedule and that staff is fully utilized; and shifts personnel to handle emergency cleaning, maintenance, and care projects.
  • Supervises the custodial program inventory system, including the requisitioning and proper distribution and control of new cleaning equipment and supplies.

  • Supervises unskilled maintenance and repairs to buildings and equipment, and requests semiskilled or skilled trades staff as necessary.

  • Inspects buildings and assigned areas for compliance with cleaning guidelines; and investigates complaints of unsatisfactory cleaning performance and takes corrective action.

  • Prepares a portion or the entire annual equipment, supplies, and personnel budget for the custodial operation.

  • Evaluates and makes recommendations for equipment, changes in cleaning methods, and work performance standards to ensure a more effective and efficient cleaning program.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements under NY HELPS Program: Two years of satisfactory full-time experience in the custodial care or cleaning of buildings, offices, or institutional residences of which one year of the experience must have been at a supervisory level.

Required: Must have taken and passed the specific job related Civil Service exam and be reachable on the appropriate Civil Service list.

Supervising Janitor Promotion: one year of permanent service in a Housekeeper, Supervising Housekeeper, or Facility Operations Assistant 2 title.

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as - $44,957.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

In addition, all full-time CSEA positions have an additional $3,087
