Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana Warehouse Shipping Associate in Indianapolis, Indiana

Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana is the states largest hunger relief organization and one of the leading food banks in the Feeding America Network. In additional to vital hunger relief programs in our 21-county service area, we also operate Fresh Connect Central, a regional produce cooperative for Feeding America, serve as a contract reclamation site for Kroger Central Division, and are a staging site for FEMA disaster response.

Position Purpose:The Warehouse Associate will predominantly work wherever needed throughout the Distribution Center. Including tasks such as: load and unload shipments, put away finished Production inventory, fulfill orders from dry warehouse area, execute smooth receipt when receiving product, inventory, replenish product in pick bins, and order fulfillment with accuracy in all activity. The Warehouse Associate will work with other staff, volunteers, and our customers on a daily basis to include, Kroger Reclamation, CSFP, Special Boxes, Freezer needs, Cooler needs and Janitorial needs daily. All responsibilities shall be consistent with Gleaners Food Bank's mission to be a leader in the fight against hunger.

Essential Functions of the Warehouse Shipping Associate:

  • Primary function is to pick orders using a riding pallet jack and a scan gun, loading outbound semis and box trucks, and using a forklift to bring product down in the racking for the next days orders.
  • Perform various warehouse functions including product receipt, loading and unloading of semis and box trucks, put-away, replenishment, order-fulfillment (by both case and pallet quantities), prepare product for distribution (including wrapping pallets and labeling orders), and ship product to final customer.Lead volunteer groups in sorting of food/non-food so as to maximize velocity through the DC
    1. Take direction as indicated by multiple sources: document, scanner or other instruction.
    2. Keep your work station clean and log all cleaning performed in the AIB binders.
    3. Change tasks and assignments as the needs of our Distribution Center require.
  • Responsible for assisting and/or leading groups of volunteers.
  • Work safely and accurately with minimal supervision.

  • Operate a PIT equipment according to Gleaners and OSHA guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance and adherence to all food safety guidelines according to GFB, Feeding America, AIB, USDA, ISDH and any other applicable processes or regulations for safe and sanitary production and storage of all products.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements of the Warehouse Shipping Associate:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Prior experience in customer service is desired
  • Knowledge and experience performing warehouse functions (safety procedures, product receipt, put-away, replenishment, inventory, order-fulfillment and shipment, etc.)
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to lift and/or and move 50 lbs. regularly and to push/pull 2,000lbs. of product using manual pallet jack.
  • Ability to speak clearly.
  • Ability to operate machine, mechanical, and electrical equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

Qualifications of Warehouse Shipping Associate:

  • Ability to read, write and to understand instructions
  • Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully with all staff members, agencies, volunteers and donors:
  • Ability to perform basic math functions, (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
  • Ability to count accurately and maintain accurate records
  • Understands warehouse inventory
  • Being able to identify good vs. bad produce.
  • Be accountable and meet deadlines on a consistent basis
  • Maintain a positive attitude
  • Ability to execute instructions with exacting (100% compliance) attention to detail
  • Pallet jack certification and experience preferred
  • Forklift certification (or ability to be certified)
