Position Purpose

Under general direction, operates and oversees the operation of packer trucks and workers.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties

• Operates packer truck and supervises sanitation workers in the collection of refuse / from residential and or commercial customers.

• Ensures premises are left clean.

• Ensures that collection schedule is maintained.

• Participates annually in collection drive of above-normal amounts of yard refuse and discarded household articles.

• Daily cleaning and maintenance.

• Answers inquiries and complaints and attends to their disposition.

• Inspects equipment for proper safety and ensures that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignment.

• Knowledge of street locations and of assigned routes.

• Enforces safety regulations and work standards among crew members, and reports violations of refuse collectors to supervisor.

• May answer inquiries from citizens on the route regarding collection regulations.

• Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Training and Experience

• Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an equivalent GED certificate, supported by one (1) year of responsible experience in the operations of heavy equipment.

Special Requirements

• Possession of a valid commercial driver's license Class B with air brakes endorsement.

• Ability to pass a physical examination.

• Ability to successfully complete background and drug screenings.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to safely operate and understand hazards in the operation of heavy equipment.

• Ability to work for long periods of time during inclement weather.

• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

• Supervisory ability.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the general public.
