U.S. Army Sustainment Command Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic in Fort Wainwright, Alaska

About the Position: Serves as an Emergency Vehicle Technician who performs a combination of maintenance, repair, fabricate, modification, equipment operation, Structural and Wildland fire apparatus, Airfield Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Crash Trucks, and emergency technical equipment repairs. Responsibilities Incumbent serves as an Emergency Vehicle Technician who has overall responsibility for performing the full scope of maintenance Repairs, rebuilds and/or modifies and completes initial disassembly inspection and diagnosis of Emergency Vehicle Equipment. Inspects entire fire apparatus vehicle/equipment and components for proper function, tolerances, and alignment. Performs initial diagnostic inspection for equipment to determine type and extent of repair needed and equipment, testing, and tools required. Responsible for diagnosing and performing modifications, repairs, and maintenance Service of tracked combat, tactical and commercial vehicles to include track, road wheels, hatches, armor (both reactive and passive types), and suspension systems. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Such knowledge, skills, and abilities must be clearly documented in your resume and must demonstrate skill and ability to perform common tasks: performing repairs, replacements, and adjustments of parts and assemblies on heavy mobile equipment; testing and troubleshooting a variety of transmissions; and interpreting schematics and blueprints. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Trouble Shooting Use of Measuring Instruments PHYSICAL EFFORT: Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods; work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Frequently works on top of and under vehicles in cramped, awkward positions. Required to do strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing 60 plus pounds, and often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers and with lifting devices, such as hoists, jacks, and cranes. WORKING CONDITIONS: Workplace is in the arctic climate of interior Alaska where roads and grounds are covered in snow and ice 7+ months of the year and temperatures drop below -50 degrees F, adding significant complexity and time required for all operations. Equipment with water must be protected from freezing. Equipment stored outside gets packed with snow and ice and must be thawed before work can begin. Climate makes towing NMC vehicles in/around the maintenance facility or on roadways more difficult and dangerous. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct deposit of pay is required. This is an Installations Career Field position.
