TITLE: Colleague Safety Specialist

DEPARTMENT: Quality and Risk Management

REPORTS TO: Regional Director Colleague Safety

POSITION SUMMARY

The Colleague Safety Specialist (CSS) is responsible for the implementation of the Trinity Health Colleague Safety Curriculum and the facility’s colleague safety activities in both the inpatient and outpatient settings for the TH NY Region (SJH and SPHP). The Colleague Safety Specialist is responsible for data management and supporting the education components of the facility’s Colleague Safety program. Promotes the organizational colleague safety initiatives to include, sharps injury prevention, workplace violence prevention (WPV), slips, trips and falls (STF), and Safe patient handling and movement (SPHM). Has general knowledge of, and is familiar with, how the facility’s worker’s compensation insurance coverage may apply to colleague harm events.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Experience in healthcare quality assurance and patient or colleague safety or other health law or employment practices experience.

  • Ideally, the candidate will have 3-5 years’ experience in risk management, colleague safety or workplace investigations, injury case management and/or OSHA recordkeeping.

  • RN preferred

  • Certified CPPS or equivalent preferred. Required within 2 years of hire.

  • CPI trainier Certification required within 1 year.

  • Ergonomic assessment training within 1 year.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS, OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Strong written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal, motivational and conflict resolution skills. Broad-based knowledge of OSHA and other hospital related regulatory compliance requirements. Presentation skills, team player, negotiation/ crucial conversations skills and ability to influence change without direct authority.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS: Office and/or Clinical Setting. Occasional travel required. Occasional work from home option based on the needs of the organization.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Sedentary work: requires sitting, standing, and walking.

WORK CONTACT GROUP: All services, employees, medical staff, patients, visitors, vendors, various regulatory and professional agencies.

Responsibilities:

  • The Colleague Safety Specialist is the subject matter expert for the THNY colleague injury loss control programs and is responsible for the in-house case management of occupational illnesses and injuries.

  • Provides ongoing education to the organization on safety science and foundations of safety behaviors to ensure safety is fully integrated into organizational systems, tools and practices (e.g., THLS, Communication, Education, Onboarding.)

  • Facilitates and supports Clinical colleague safety committees. Provides guidance and recommendations regarding accident and illness prevention strategies, including but not limited to safe patient handling, sharps/exposures, workplace violence, slip, trip and falls and ergonomics.

  • Gatekeeping incidents in electronic reporting system within 24 hours, with on-call coverage as needed to maintain or exceed assigned metric.

  • Supports maintenance of OSHA log in conjunction with Worker’s Compensation coordinator.

  • Develops and administers systems to track lost and restricted time.

  • Collaborates with Clinical Risk Specialist in investigation of patient events that include colleague harm events and Employee Health Leads to achieve consistent and mature safety systems (e.g., debriefing, cause analysis, event classification, disclosure, safety alerts, learning and improvement).

  • Provides report of investigation pertaining to new events, claims and legal actions. (Conducts medical record reviews, preliminary staff inquiries/ interviews/ fact finding, review of policies, procedures, protocols, standards of care, and pertinent literature as requested).

  • Reviews and analyzes workers’ compensation claim and litigation experience and prepares reports for Clinical, Department, and Sr. Leadership staff identifying trends. Collaborates with Leadership in developing changed processes/ other loss reduction/ prevention strategies to improve care.

  • Assist the Regional Director of Risk Management in the reporting and management of worker’s compensation claims and evaluate the extent and elements of exposure recommending appropriate actions for risk mitigation.

  • Participates in SPHP/SJH risk reduction/ safety initiatives (i.e., THEIR, Midas, SSE/SEC Zero Harm, TogetherSafe).

  • Serves as a resource to the THNY managers and directors related to completion of THEIRS reports and post incident investigation forms.

  • Manage colleague blood and body fluid exposure incident investigation & reporting.

  • Monitors reserves and assists Worker’s compensation claims managers in claim settlements and reserve adjustments.

  • Identifies and investigates claims for possible fraud, subrogation, contribution, recovery, controversion and case management opportunities to reduce total claim cost

  • Reviews and analyzes all incoming colleague occurrence reports for regulatory and insurance concerns.

  • Identifies trends, patterns, and findings in colleague events and implements corrective action plans as needed.

  • Collaborates with the Director in managing and developing new Colleague safety initiatives, campaigns and support programs as requested or required.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Pay Range: $31.50hr - $45.70hr

Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
